18th of September 2014: Walk in Dublin in memory of Peggy and Casper to support dementia

There are about 48,000 people living with dementia in Ireland, according to the Alzheimer Society of Ireland. The majority of them – about 63 per cent – live at home. Many are cared for by family members and are futher supported by home care providers such as Be Independent Home Care. Research has shown that those with dementia cope better when in their own environment with familiar faces and a familiar routine.

Last year a lady called Peggy Mangan, who had Alzheimer's, and her beloved cavalier king charles dog Casper left their Dublin home to take their daily walk. They never returned home, and were located on September 28 in a field beside Ikea in Ballymun. Casper was alive and beside Peggy's body. Sadly, he too passed away within two hours of being located.

A walk in honour of the pair will take place this Saturday. 'Walk for Peggy and Casper' is to raise funds for the purchase and maintenance of a Mobile Outreach Unit to provide a support service to people with dementia and their families.

The route of the Walk for Peggy and Casper will follow their steps.
