The Irish Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Day is running today with the charity hoping to raise €3.5 million this year. More than 3,000 volunteers are out on the streets raising funds which will be used to provide cancer information and support services. Today marks the 25th anniversary of the event.

Here at Be Independent Home Care our home care assistants operating in the community, caring for people in their homes, particularly those at the end of life have seen first hand the amazing assistance that this fundraising leads to. Among many other services The Irish Cancer Society provide a home nursing service called Night Nursing. Night Nurses provide end of life care for cancer patients and their families in their own home. Night nurses are free of charge for up to 10 nights – this is completely funded by money generously donated on Daffodil Day every year. In 2010, 2,000 families throughout Ireland used the Irish Cancer Society Night Nursing service.
